Northern Ireland's Only Fully Equipped Self Service Garage

What is a self service garage

It’s a carefully laid out space with all the necessary garage equipment and tools where individuals can carry out repairs and service their own vehicles.  We also have Specialist Equipment aimed at the motorsport market, including corner weights and bump steer gauges.

In addition we also cater for Motorbikes, with two motorcycle ramps fitted.

How Much Does it Cost

You only pay £10 + vat per hour for standard bays and £20 +vat per hour for the bays with lifts. There is a minimum 1 hour charge that applies.  We also charge an environmental fee of £5.00 to dispose of used engine oil on site following an oil change.

How Much Does it Cost to Hire Tools

There are no charges for hiring standard tools.  Standard Equipment can be hired from £10.00 per hour and Specialist Equipment from £20.00 per hour.  Customers who sign up for our membership scheme will receive a discount on the hire price based on their level of membership.  We do ask you to leave either your driving licence or a £100 deposit when hiring tools, which will be fully refunded when the tools and equipment have been returned.

What Tasks Can I Carry Out

Depending on your skill anything from servicing, changing brakes, exhaust, transmission and engines.  We also have specialist equipment available to hire for setting up corner weights, tracking, etc.

What Tasks Can I Not Carry Out

Unfortunately you can not carry out any works that relates to fuel tanks or welding or spraying.

Do You Have Mechanics Onsite

Our floor supervisors are there to assist you as much as they can but they cannot get involved in repairing you car, we do however have a directory of mechanics available on site who you could call and arrange for assistance.

In addition, The Motor Gym is equipped with Autodata software which is available for customers use should you run into any difficulties and need specific information regarding your vehicle.  Autodata covers a number of subjects including:-

  • Technical Data
    Lubrication and Capacities
    Ignition Systems
    Fuel Systems
    Torque rates
    Brakes
    Wheel Alignment
    Timing Belts
    Diagnostic Trouble Codes
    And much more.

Autodata covers the majority of vehicles including the most popular motorbikes.  Members of The Auto Gym can access this information for free and print outs are available at £0.50 per page.

What Happens When I Arrive

When you arrive you will park your vehicle in the car park and proceed to the reception area.  Here you will check in, sign the appropriate disclaimers, and will then be assigned the appropriate bay depending on the type of work you intend to carry out.

During the check-in process, you will complete a form with general information including name, address, phone number, method of payment, type of repair/maintenance to be performed, and expected time of completion. This form will have a disclaimer relinquishing The Motor Gym from any liability resulting in the customer's inability to perform the repair.

You will be given ten identification tags that can be traded for tools.  You must give up one tag for each tool you wish to rent.  This process prevents any one customer from accumulating all the tools, which would limit other customers' access.   The price to rent the tools will vary.  If the method of payment chosen is credit card, then the card will be swiped prior to service.  If however you wish to pay in cash, then you must either leave a credit card, drivers license or cash deposit before the ten tags are issued.

When you have completed your work, you will finish the check-out process prior to removing the vehicle from the repair bay.  You will the return all of the identification tags, or the tools you have received for the tags.  Once the tool account has been reconciled, the completion time will be recorded and the invoice prepared.  The invoice will provide an itemised list of costs to include: bay rental fee (based on time and type of bay), tool rental fee (based on the category of tools rented), miscellaneous charges (computer printouts of repair instructions or explosion charts), and taxes.  After payment is made, you will be allowed to remove your car from the bay.
